Demand action against Israel's killing and attack on Flotilla to Gaza

20 unarmed civilians on board the international humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza have been killed by Israeli naval forces.

Israeli commandos descending from helicopters stormed the six-boat flotilla in the early hours of Monday morning, while it was in international waters, about 90 miles (150km) from Gaza, where Israel has no jurisdiction.

You have called for a 'full, impartial and independent' inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Monday's fatal Israeli attack on the aid flotilla saililng to Gaza. However, you will be well aware of the Israeli government's history of non-cooperation with independent inquiries, the most recent being the UN-led Goldstone Inquiry into Operation Cast Lead which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 Palestinians.
 
An independent inquiry will not even begin to address the act of war that Israel has committed in international waters, on international citizens, in territory far outside its naval jurisdiction. By virtue of the decision by the Permanent Court of International Justice in the Lotus case (1927), the basic principle under customary international law, is that '...vessels on the high seas are subject to no authority except that of the State whose flag they fly'; in this case, Turkey.
 
Furthermore, a 1988 treaty, to which Israel is party, criminalises the unlawful and intentional seizure, or exercise of control over, a ship by force and all connected injuries, deaths and/or detentions.
 
It is quite clear that Israel has breached international law in boarding and attacking those on board the Marvi Marmara. Such a breach of international law by Israel is nothing new - its occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and the Golan Heights is a flagrant violation of UN Resolution 242, the construction of the Separation Wall in the West Bank is a breach of International Court of Justice rulings, the Israeli settlements in the West Bank breach UN Resolution 446, while the Israeli-only roads which cut through Palestinian land in the West Bank flout Resolution 465. And these are only a few of the international treaties, resolutions and obligations that Israel violates on a daily basis.
 
It is time for Britain and the international community to stand up and say enough is enough. Israel must know that if it breaks international law, it will face isolation from the international community.
 
I call on the UK to:

* Immediately recall Britain's ambassador to Israel
    * Expel Israel's ambassador to Britain
    * End UK arms sales to Israel
    * Suspend the EU-Israel Trade Agreement
    * Withdraw Israel's membership of the OECD
    * Ban the import of goods from illegal Israeli settlements into the UK
    * Demand an end to Israel's siege of Gaza

Millions of ordinary citizens, including myself, are horrified and appalled by Israel's aggressive policies against the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza, whose land they illegally occupy, and now against international citizens on a humanitarian aid mission. We call on our elected representatives to reflect this outrage, and bring Israel into line with international jurisdiction.
